Lord, shape my heart to reflect Your love as I speak, and order my words with wisdom and grace. Strengthen me to remain faithful to what You entrust to me, and steady me in moments that require courage. In the name of Jesus I pray. AMEN

29 years ago today, on May 4th, I delivered my initial sermon at Second Calvary Baptist Church in Norfolk, Virginia, under the leadership of Pastor Geoffrey Van Guns. The message the Lord placed in my spirit was “Enduring an Interruption” from Mark 5:21–43, Matthew 9:18–26, and Luke 8:40–56.

That moment marked the beginning of a preaching journey filled with divine appointments, unexpected shifts, sacred interruptions, and undeniable evidence of God’s faithfulness.

As I reflect today, I remain grateful for every opportunity God has given me to proclaim His Word. What appeared to be interruptions along the journey often became invitations for greater revelation, deeper trust, and transformative ministry.

The same Jesus who paused for the woman with the issue of blood while still moving toward Jairus’ house continues to demonstrate that every interruption in our lives carries the potential for purpose and manifestation.

I honor the foundation, the faith community that affirmed the call, and the God who continues to order each step.

Luke 18:11 reveals a Pharisee who “stood and prayed thus with himself…” The original Greek phrase “pros heauton” carries the idea of “to himself” or “toward himself.” While he uses the word Theos (God), meaning the one true God in a general sense, the structure of the text exposes something deeper: his prayer is not truly directed upward in surrender but inward in self-reference.

OT Psalm 51:17 KJV The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: A broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.

NT Luke 18:11

KJV ~ The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican.

NLT ~ The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed this prayer: ‘I thank you, God, that I am not like other people—cheaters, sinners, adulterers. I’m certainly not like that tax collector!

MSG ~ The Pharisee posed and prayed like this: ‘Oh, God, I thank you that I am not like other people—robbers, crooks, adulterers, or, heaven forbid, like this tax man.’

Points to Ponder: Am I speaking to God, or am I rehearsing myself in the presence of God?

Who is truly being addressed in the heart?

It is possible to use holy language while missing holy posture.

Lord, purify my prayers from pride and self-reference. Teach me to truly seek you with an undivided heart. In the name of Jesus I pray. AMEN
